OKAY, idk if you have talked about this or not ( sorry if you have ). But I've been reading the force awakens novelizations ( 100 years later ) & I'm really curious about your opinion on the scene where rey is tempted to sell bb-8. Because the novelization version is SO different from the movie? I found it absolutely interesting & since your headcanons are so amazingly detailed and you have such a complex view on rey that is rarely found I was curious about your thoughts on that

MY  LONGEST  YEAH  BOY  EVER,  okay okay so, we’re gonna break this tf down because I have SO many feelings about it okay. I appreciate the novelization interpretation of that scene a bit more because it’s truer to Rey’s character ( as well as more accurate to any old person in her situation ) though I can understand why it wasn’t in the film. It would be harder to convey without the added text and could make Rey look unsympathetic in the eyes of some, especially without a whole lot of context regarding her character / background. I would have given anything to see her verbally tear Plutt apart though tHAT WAS A SHAME.

First things first, Rey doesn’t hold any attachment towards BB-8 and really only saves him because the Teedo is poaching on her territory. She does cave and let him return home with her the more persistent and anxious he became though because she KNOWS what its like to be alone and helpless. ( All of their dialogue from that point on is absolute gold tbh ) She’s certainly not coldhearted, even towards droids.

Secondly, she didn’t know BB-8 has any vital, galaxy saving information ( and even then, would she care? we just don’t know ) He’s just a lil piece of machinery to her, she literally tries to shoo him away as soon as she gets to Niima like THERE’S YOUR RIDE PAL, ADIOS. Sometimes I forget that MOST people in this universe view droids differently then we ourselves do. To quote Norra ‘robotphobe’  Wexley ‘You can’t befriend a droid.’ Rey can appreciate him to an extent at this time, but as a scavenger, he’s scrap metal that will bring her a lot of food. You can def see her become more attached to him throughout the film though. Up until that point I doubt she’s interacted with too many droids, especially not ones like him.

Also speaking of food! Let’s not forget that she’s starving. It would be foolish to even consider turning down such an offer. It’s a mark of her moral compass that she walks away from it all. She knows manipulation when she sees it. Plutt is absolute SCUM and it’s his reaction more so than BB-8′s wellbeing that incites her speedy departure from the concession stand. I’ll probably write another thing on Plutt eventually but his interactions with her are very telling. Rey can see right through his shit and knows whatever he has planned isn’t worth the price. The sheer amount of effort that would take though would be astounding, and she probably regretted it for a heartbeat until all of the excitement started. It’s really unsurprising to me that she did what she did in the novel, it’s what MOST would do in a situation like that I think. The novelization paints Rey in perfect shades of gray and as a girl that WANTS to be good, though she might not make the correct choices right off the bat.

Do you forfeit an objet that has little value to you for something you need so desperately to an insidious, conniving creature? Or do you choose the road less traveled to see where it leads because you know in your heart its the right thing to do.
